CMB Profile

Ed Muckerman, CMB
Director of Business Evaluation
GMAC RFC
Bethesda, MD

What do you do within the mortgage industry?

I have worked in the mortgage industry since 1979, in every functional area imaginable. In my early years, the copy machine was my best friend. However, I have spent most of my career in the secondary marketing area. This is an area of the business that fascinates me and I enjoy the pace and fluidity of the markets.

I have worked for GMAC RFC since August of 1999. In my current role, I perform business evaluations on new and existing warehouse clients.

When did you become a CMB?

I proudly became a Certified Mortgage Banker at MBA's Annual Conference in October of 2004. During the CMB graduation, as I sat in the Marriott in San Francisco, listening to U2's "It's a Beautiful Day," I reflected on what I have done in my career. It was a truly proud moment.

What challenges did you face while working towards the designation?

One challenge I faced, was committing to the time it took to study and prepare for the written and oral examinations. I would go home at night and do my homework and I spent time during the business day to prepare.

Another challenge, though easier to overcome, is to have a conversation with your manager, President, and CEO, and ask them to support you during the process and set expectations for the amount of time it will take to achieve this goal. In the end, it will make you more valuable to your company and the industry in general.

What advice do you have for others considering the CMB designation?

For all of those who read this message, make this a personal goal and set up a meeting with your manager to get them to commit to the time it will take for you to achieve this designation. I made it a personal goal and my sponsor gave me the extra push to get to the finish line. The MBA is a great resource to help you achieve this designation as well. The folks at the MBA will bend over backwards to provide you with the right coursework and materials you need to get to the finish line. Also, once you get your CMB you will be so proud, your self-esteem will rise, and you will become a bigger asset to your organization and the community.
