Preparation - Finding Places to Live
Take a moment to watch how to locate information about
places to live. The demonstration will show you how to use free
maps and information on the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Web site.
Directions
Read all the steps below before you begin.
- Adjust your computer's audio capability so you can hear the
sound in the demonstration.
- Click the Free Maps
link. A window will open with an animation
of the USGS Web site showing how to use free online maps for finding
places to live.
- Click the Close Window to return to the course.
Check Your Learning
Try using the USGS map tools to locate information about a neighborhood
that interests you. Read all the steps before beginning.
Directions
- Click the Free Maps link.
Note: You can follow the same
steps that you saw in the demonstration or select
other options shown on the site.
- Type or select the search information in the boxes
provided and click Send Query. The system search results
will appear on a new page.
- Click the desired location link. A new page appears
with links to select one of the map types.
- Click to select a map type. Then, select the desired
map size and resolution.
- Scroll to the Partners area on the same page to
view the facts provided for this location.
- Look for the neighborhood characteristics.
- Click the Close Window link to return to the course.
